From very humble beginnings, Scott Lanpher started Scott’s Recreation in 2004 with one store located in Manchester, Maine. It was a true family-run business with Holly, his wife, overseeing accounting and HR. Both of his kids were also active in the company through their schooling. In 2011, he purchased the Turner, ME location. Fresh out of high school in 2016, Scott’s son, Reid Lanpher, became the General Manager of the Turner Maine store and was very involved in overall company operations. In 2019, they opened the doors of the Hermon, Maine store, and in 2021 the Orono, ME store.

After consistently working 70+ hour weeks his entire career, in 2021, Scott decided to sell the company to the employees and take a step back as the COO. Reid was named CEO. 

Now an ESOP (employee-owned), with a young management team across all of our locations, the company is positioned well for decades more of growth and refinement. 

Just RV’s → Multiple Product Offerings

When the company started in 2004, the only major offerings were Travel Trailers, Fifth Wheels, and Toy Haulers.
Fast forward to today and the primary offerings for each location are as follows:

  • Turner: RVs, Trailers, Tractors, Heavy Equipment, Powersports, Containers, Docks
  • Manchester: RVs, Trailers
  • Orono: Tractors, Heavy Equipment
  • Hermon: Trailers

Scott’s Recreation → SR1 Companies

The major reasons:

  1. Brand identity issue: All “Scott’s Recreation” locations were very different. For example, the Turner store sells 7 major product categories, whereas the Hermon store only sells trailers. However, they were both called the same thing.
  2. “Recreation” was not a good label for industrial offerings. Although the Scott’s Recreation name was very well respected by those familiar with the company, the name was not a good fit for all with the tractor and heavy equipment segment growth.
  3. Websites: It was becoming very difficult to have one website for all of the different categories and give customers the best shopping experience possible. From aluminum waterfront docks to 50,000-pound excavators on the same listing platform was a challenge.

The solution:

A universal brand name that all of our SR1 Employee Owners can be proud of and represent to the highest standards while allowing specific product segments to be individually branded.
